Daily digest · 10-01-2026

Thursday, Oct 1, 2026, then tomorrow

Narrow positive close: S&P 500 +0.23%, Nasdaq 100 +0.34%, Russell 2000 +0.39%, Dow +0.03%. Only 5 of 11 sectors gained, so headline index strength masked weak breadth. Energy led at +1.97% (XLE closed 62.69 from 61.48) on no single clean macro catalyst in today's calendar. Technology +1.10% was driven in part by Accenture (ACN) surging 18% after beating Q4 estimates and guiding FY2027 revenue above consensus, which lifted ServiceNow (NOW) and Unity (U); Lumentum (LITE) and Coherent (COHR) also surged on reports of new Washington restrictions targeting Chinese optical transceivers. Health Care was the session's worst sector at -1.34% (XLV closed 166.19 from 168.44), with Corteva (CTVA) plunging 84% as the sharpest single-name event. The ACN earnings read-through into software peers and the optical-transceiver trade restriction theme are the two clearest carry-forwards into tomorrow.

Tomorrow

Friday, Oct 2, 2026

What is scheduled, with ET times. Not a forecast of how it lands.

The 8:30 AM jobs report is the dominant structural event: expect front-loaded volatility at the open with spread widening and potential for a trend-reversal or acceleration depending on the print relative to consensus. No earnings are scheduled. Fed minutes are due Wednesday, October 7 at 2:00 PM, sitting inside any multi-day swing hold opened Friday. Watch whether the jobs number reinforces or contradicts the September ISM manufacturing PMI softness seen today, and watch whether the Energy and Tech leadership from today holds or fades into a risk-off read if payrolls disappoint.

Session structure

How the calendar shapes each holding period. Descriptive only: not advice, and not a recommendation to trade anything.

⚡ ScalpFriday's 8:30 AM jobs report concentrates volatility sharply at the open. Bid-ask spreads in equity and index products typically widen around high-impact economic releases, and the price action immediately following the print can be erratic before a cleaner trend establishes itself.
☀️ Day tradeThe session's structural character is largely set by the 8:30 AM jobs number. The software and AI-infrastructure names that moved sharply on Thursday, as well as the Health Care sector's notable weakness, are the thematic areas where Friday's tape reaction will be most informative.
🌊 SwingAny position opened Friday carries two scheduled risk events inside a typical multi-day hold: the jobs report at 8:30 AM Friday and the Fed minutes on Wednesday, October 7 at 2:00 PM. Thursday's breadth was narrow at 5 of 11 sectors positive, and VIX closed at 16.39, essentially unchanged.
🌲 Long termThe Anthropic IPO filing at a potential valuation of up to $2 trillion, Broadcom's (AVGO) $42 billion lending commitment to secure compute capacity, and AWS commentary on AI infrastructure economics are headline-level developments relevant to the AI-infrastructure investment theme. The October 7 Fed minutes are the next scheduled macro release that matters at a longer time horizon.
